Sell A Non-Running Land Rover Defender 90, 110 or 130
A Defender that won’t start is the normal case here, not the awkward one. If you’ve been quoted for a chassis or an engine and the number is more than you reckon the vehicle is worth, there’s nothing to fix and nothing to photograph first. We buy the Defender 90, 110 and 130, Series and classic models and TD5-era vehicles as they stand, non-runners, MOT failures and write-offs included. Because it can’t be driven, a flatbed comes for it at no charge to you, and the bank transfer goes through before it’s loaded. Tell us the registration, the mileage and what’s wrong with it.
What Actually Stops A Defender, And Why It Doesn't End The Sale
Most dead Defenders we’re called to have died in one of a handful of ways, and the reason owners stop spending is nearly always the labour rather than the part. Bulkheads rot because water sits in the footwell seams and behind the door hinge pillars, and mud packs in where you can’t wash it out, so the steel goes from the inside. The chassis goes the same way at the rear crossmember and the outriggers. A galvanised replacement chassis isn’t expensive in itself, but fitting one means stripping the vehicle to a bare frame and transferring everything across, and that’s the point at which a garage quote stops looking like a repair.
Then the engines. Head gaskets on the 300Tdi and Td5 go, and a Td5 that’s been run low on oil or had the injector harness leak oil into the loom brings electrical faults with it that look like something worse than they are. Puma engines let go too. And a Defender that has towed or worked for a living wears its gearbox and transfer box out long before the bodywork gives up.
None of that puts it out of scope. These vehicles are bought to be repaired and resold, not weighed in, which is why a fault that ends its life with a repairer doesn’t end it with us.
What selling your non-running Defender to us actually looks like
The process runs in four steps. None of them requires you to move the vehicle.
Get a quote: send the registration, postcode, mileage and a description of the fault. We'll give you a number without seeing the vehicle.
Accept the offer: no obligation. If the number works for you, we'll book a collection slot.
We collect: our own driver and our own transporter come to wherever the Defender is standing. There’s no recovery to arrange and no transport cost to you, so the distance is our problem rather than yours. Payment is by bank transfer, completed at handover, before the Defender is loaded. The money is in your account while the vehicle is still on your ground. That’s the opposite of a listing with a reserve and a week of waiting to see whether anybody bids. Payment is a transfer rather than cash because UK rules bar scrap metal dealers from paying cash. The quote you accept is the amount you receive: nothing knocked off when the truck arrives, and no admin fee taken off the top.
How We Collect A Defender That Cannot Be Driven
We’re based in Kent and we collect nationwide. Outside the South East that means the transporter travels to you rather than us having a yard down the road, and we won’t pretend otherwise. The truck is ours and the driver is ours, and the mileage costs you nothing.
A Defender is rarely parked somewhere convenient. Nose-in on a driveway, in a farmyard, behind a locked gate, sat on grass, up on axle stands with the wheels off, brakes seized solid after three winters of standing: all of that is normal and all of it goes on a flatbed with a winch rather than being towed. If it has no keys, say so. If access is tight or the ground is soft, tell us when you enquire and the collection gets planned around it.
The vehicle’s status doesn’t block anything either. Untaxed, on a SORN, MOT expired, failed outright on corrosion, off the road for years. None of that stops the sale and none of it needs putting right before we come.
What We Pay For A Non-Running Defender
The figure comes from current trade market data for that model, not a fixed price list and not the kerb weight. That’s the whole reason a broken Defender is worth more here than at a scrapyard, where the only question asked is how much the thing weighs.
What moves the number is the variant and the year, the engine, the mileage, how much of the chassis and bulkhead is left, and what condition everything that isn’t broken is in. A 110 with a tired engine and a solid frame is a different proposition from a 90 with a good engine sitting on rotten outriggers, and we price both on what’s actually there.
A recorded write-off stays in scope. Category S, Category N, insurance total loss, repairable salvage: a vehicle an insurer has declared uneconomical to repair still has a trade value, and we’ll quote on it the same way. Tell us the category when you get in touch.
What you get is a purchase, not a listing. There’s no reserve, no auction week, no viewings, and nobody turning up to negotiate over rust on a vehicle you can’t demonstrate a fix for. With a dead Defender there’s nothing to present anyway, which is exactly why the retail route wastes the seller’s time.
Paperwork On A Vehicle You Can't Drive Or Demonstrate
We complete and submit the V5C transfer section with you at collection and talk you through the registered-keeper side of it. Telling DVLA the vehicle has been sold is the registered keeper’s job and stays with you. The quickest way is DVLA’s own service at gov.uk/sold-bought-vehicle, which takes about five minutes with the reference number from the V5C and confirms on screen straight away. Save or screenshot that confirmation, because it’s your proof.
A missing V5C doesn’t block the sale. Plenty of long-standing Defenders have lost theirs and we deal with that regularly. If there’s outstanding finance on the vehicle, raise it when you call so we can work out the position before anything is agreed.

How To Get A Figure For Your Non-Running Defender
Use the valuation form with the registration, your postcode, the mileage and a few lines on what the vehicle is doing or not doing. No photographs, no inspection and no obligation. If the number works, we book the collection; if it doesn’t, that’s the end of it.
