Sell Your Range Rover Sport with Engine Failure

Yes, you can sell a Range Rover Sport with a dead engine, legally and exactly as it stands. It doesn’t need to start, turn over, hold oil pressure or move under its own power, and you don’t need to spend anything on it first. Most people who find this page have a repair quote in front of them that costs more than they want to put into the car, and have been told by somebody that it’s scrap now. It usually isn’t. We buy Land Rover and Range Rover only, so a Sport with a failed engine is priced as a Range Rover Sport rather than as a weight of metal.

Which Range Rover Sport Engines Fail, And How

The 3.0 TDV6 and SDV6 crankshaft failure is the one that ends most Sports. The crank lets go, the bottom end goes with it, and once it’s apart you’re buying an engine rather than repairing one. That’s the point at which owners stop spending.

The belt on the TDV6 doesn’t sit at the front where you’d expect. It’s at the back of the engine, against the bulkhead, so reaching it means separating the gearbox from the engine. A belt job on paper turns into a gearbox job in the workshop, which is why the quote reads the way it does. On the petrol V6 it’s timing chains instead: guides and tensioners wear, the chain gets slack, and the rattle on a cold start is the warning before the timing slips.

The 2.0 Ingenium uses a wet belt, which runs submerged in engine oil. As it ages it sheds material into the sump, that debris finds the oil pickup, and the engine is starved of oil before anything sounds wrong. Turbo failure, head gasket failure and a fully seized engine are the endpoints people usually arrive with. If you’re asking which years to avoid, the honest answer is that it’s the engine family and the service history that decide it, not the plate.

What selling your Range Rover Sport to us actually looks like

The process runs in four steps. None of them requires you to move the vehicle.

Get a quote: call or email with the model, year, mileage, and the main fault. We'll give you a number without seeing the car.

Accept the offer: no obligation. If the number works for you, we'll book a collection slot.

We collect: our own driver and our own transporter come to wherever the car is standing. There’s no recovery firm to arrange and nothing for you to pay towards getting it loaded. Same-day payment: bank transfer on the day of collection, before the car goes on the truck. Not a cheque. Not within a few working days. We don’t quote over the phone and then revise the number downward on the day. The quote you accept is the amount that lands in your account.

Collecting A Range Rover Sport That Will Not Start

A Sport with a failed engine can’t be driven onto a trailer and often can’t be pushed either. With a flat battery it may still be locked in park, and two and a half tonnes of Range Rover doesn’t move on a sloping drive by hand. That’s a recovery job, and it’s ours, on a flatbed, at no charge to you.

Tell us when you enquire where the car actually is and what state it’s in. Nose-in against a garage wall, boxed in behind another vehicle, standing for eight months on flat tyres, no MOT and no tax on it. None of that stops the collection, but it changes how the driver plans the lift, and the drivers would rather know before they arrive than after.

We’re based in Kent and we collect nationwide with our own transporters. Outside Kent that means we travel to you, and the distance costs you nothing. We’re not going to pretend to have a yard round the corner from you, and if you’d rather see the towns we cover, there are pages for them across the site.

What We Pay For A Range Rover Sport With Engine Failure

The reason a specialist figure beats a salvage figure is where the car goes next. We repair and resell rather than break for parts wherever the condition supports it, so the bid is struck against what a working Range Rover Sport is worth on the trade market, minus the engine work, rather than against a kerb weight. Not every car ends up repaired, and condition decides that, but the valuation starts from a car that can be put right.

Plenty of value survives an engine that doesn’t. The ZF gearbox and transfer box are usually untouched by a bottom end failure. Air suspension struts, the compressor and the valve block are worth real money on their own. So are straight panels, an undamaged interior, unkerbed wheels and a clean set of electronics. A late Sport with a good body is a car somebody wants back on the road.

Quotes are built from the registration, postcode, mileage and an honest description of the fault, and priced against current trade values for that model, engine and year rather than a scrap rate card. Because the collector can’t drive it away, sellers reasonably worry the number drops on the driveway. It doesn’t. There’s no reduction on arrival and no fees or admin charges taken off.

Paperwork, Payment And What You Are Actually Agreeing To

We pay before or at the point of collection by bank transfer, and payment is confirmed before the vehicle is loaded. We complete and submit the V5C transfer section with you at collection, but telling DVLA the vehicle has been sold is the registered keeper’s job and stays with you. The quickest way is DVLA’s own service at gov.uk/sold-bought-vehicle, which takes about five minutes with the reference number from the V5C and confirms on screen. Save or screenshot that confirmation, because it’s your proof.

If the V5C has gone missing, say so when you enquire. It doesn’t block the sale. One distinction is worth understanding before you agree to anything: a car sold for repair and resale is not a car going to an authorised treatment facility for a Certificate of Destruction. Once a Certificate of Destruction is issued the vehicle can never return to the road, and that’s a different transaction from the one we’re offering.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a Range Rover Sport with a seized engine worth more than scrap value?

Usually, yes. A seized engine doesn’t touch the gearbox, transfer box, air suspension, body, interior or wheels, and those are what the figure is built on. What moves it is the generation and specification, the mileage, whether the body is straight and whether anything else has failed alongside the engine.

Which Range Rover Sport models and engines do you buy?

Every one of them: TDV6, SDV6, the petrol V6 and V8, the 2.0 Ingenium, running or not. We buy the rest of the range too, Defender including Series and classic, Discovery, Discovery Sport, Freelander, Range Rover, Evoque and Velar. Land Rover and Range Rover only, no other makes. Our sister company, Medway Vehicle Services, diagnoses and repairs these engines in Kent, which is why describing a fault to us gets understood rather than logged.

My Range Rover Sport is stuck in a garage and can't be rolled out. Can you still collect it?

Yes. Non-runners are most of what we collect. A car locked in park with a dead battery, wedged nose-in, or sitting on flat tyres is a normal day for our drivers. Tell us the access when you enquire, including gate widths and anything parked in front of it, and the driver plans the lift around it.

How much does it cost to replace an engine in a Range Rover Sport?

It depends on which route you take, and we won’t quote a figure we haven’t seen. A used engine of unknown history is the cheapest and the biggest gamble, a reconditioned unit costs more and comes with some reassurance, and a new one rarely makes sense on an older Sport. Add the labour of getting the engine out, the ancillaries that don’t survive the swap, and the risk that whatever killed the first engine is still in the car. Any decent workshop will tell you when the repair costs more than the car is worth afterwards.

What paperwork do I need if my Range Rover Sport is untaxed and SORN?

Just the V5C, and the sale goes ahead as normal. A SORN car doesn't need taxing or an MOT to be collected, because it travels on a flatbed rather than being driven. Leave the SORN in place and tell DVLA the vehicle has been sold once collection is done.
