Why The Ingenium Chain Costs What It Costs
The 2.0 Ingenium diesel drives its timing chain from the back of the engine rather than the front. That single design decision is the reason the quotes land where they do. The parts are not expensive; getting to them is, because the gearbox has to come away from the engine, or the engine has to come out of the car, before anyone can touch the chain. You’re paying for access, not for a chain.
What usually goes first is the tensioner and the plastic guides. As they wear, the chain gains slack and stretches, camshaft and crankshaft timing drift apart, and the ECU logs a correlation fault and drops the car into limp mode. That’s the warning stage. If the chain jumps teeth or lets go altogether, the valves meet the pistons and the bill stops being a chain job and becomes a cylinder head job, or an engine.
