Sell My Land Rover or Range Rover With DPF Problems
Your Land Rover is sat in limp mode on the drive, or it wouldn’t restart after a regeneration got cut short, and a garage has quoted a figure you don’t want to spend on it. We buy Land Rovers and Range Rovers with blocked DPFs, failed regenerations and DPF faults that have put the car into limp mode, exactly as they stand.
Nothing needs driving anywhere, nothing needs an MOT and nothing needs fixing first. We’re based in Kent and we collect nationwide, so wherever the car is, it’s our own transporter and our own driver coming to it, on a flatbed if it won’t move, and the distance costs you nothing.
Selling The Car And The Land Rover DPF Claim
You’ve probably seen an advert for a DPF compensation claim before you got here. We’re a buyer, not a law firm, and we won’t tell you whether you qualify.
Who can claim, which model years an action covers and whether people who have already sold up can still join are all set by the firm running it and published on its own site. Those criteria change. Some actions are still signing claimants up and others have closed to new ones, so check with the firm directly before you decide anything, rather than taking it from an advert or from us.
The two things are different shapes, and that’s the part worth understanding. A claim runs for years, and the amount is an estimate that depends on the case succeeding, with a percentage plus VAT and disbursements coming out of whatever is recovered at the end. A sale is a figure now, a collection date, and money in your account before the car is loaded.
What's worth trying before you sell it
The process runs in four steps. None of them requires you to move the vehicle.
Get a quote: call or email with the model, year, mileage, and the main fault. We'll give you a number without seeing the car.
Accept the offer: no obligation. If the number works for you, we'll book a collection slot.
A DPF traps soot and then burns it off, and it only burns it off when the exhaust stays hot for long enough. Four miles to school and four miles back never gets it there, so the filter fills quicker than it clears, and in the end the car stops trying and puts a light on.
Cheapest first. A sustained run at motorway speed and revs, warm engine and no stopping, gives a regeneration the chance to start and actually finish. If you’ve had one begin and switched the engine off partway through, the job was left half done and the next attempt starts further behind. Where the car can no longer start a regeneration on its own, a garage can force one on diagnostic equipment. Where the soot has hardened beyond that, no regeneration will shift it and the filter has to be cleaned, in situ or off the car. A new filter is the last step and the dear one.
Having the filter gutted or removed isn’t a way out of it. It’s something the MOT test looks for, and it doesn’t make the car easier to sell. If that’s already been done to yours, say so when you enquire rather than on the day.
Why It Blocked Matters More Than The Filter Does
A filter doesn’t block for no reason, and that’s the part most quotes skip. A worn or leaking injector puts far more soot through it than it was built to take. An EGR valve stuck open does much the same. Failing turbo seals feed oil into the exhaust for the filter to cope with. A pressure or temperature sensor reading wrong means the car never asks for a regeneration at all, so the filter fills quietly while everything looks normal. The wrong oil leaves ash behind that nothing will burn off.
Then there’s oil dilution. Every aborted regeneration puts in fuel that doesn’t burn, some of it washes past the bores into the sump, and the oil level climbs. Past a certain point it isn’t a filter problem any more, and if the level has risen and the engine has started sounding different, that’s the sale to talk to us about instead.
So a filter cleaned without finding the cause blocks again. If yours has been cleaned once and the light is already back, think hard before putting money into it a third time. It’s also why two Discovery Sports with the same warning light can be worth quite different figures to us. We’re pricing what sits behind the light.
How We Work Out The Figure, And Why It's The One You Get Paid
We work from the registration, your postcode, the mileage, whether the car runs and moves under its own power, its MOT status, and whether the DPF fault stands on its own or has taken the engine with it. Quotes come off current trade values for that model in that condition rather than a fixed price list, and because a blocked filter is a repairable fault, the car gets priced as a vehicle and not by weight.
The figure we quote is the figure you’re paid. No reduction at the door, no fee or admin charge afterwards, and payment goes over by bank transfer at handover, before the vehicle is taken away. Set against an estimate that depends on a case succeeding in a few years’ time, that’s the difference worth weighing.
The Paperwork, And What Stays With You
We complete and submit the V5C transfer section with you at collection. Telling DVLA the vehicle has been sold is the registered keeper’s job, though, and it stays with you. The quickest route is DVLA’s own service at gov.uk/sold-bought-vehicle, which takes about five minutes with the reference number from the V5C and confirms on screen straight away. Save or screenshot that confirmation, because it’s your proof.
A missing logbook doesn’t stop the sale, but tell us before collection so the paperwork can be done properly. If there’s finance still running, the car isn’t yours to sell until the agreement is settled, so ask the provider for a settlement figure and tell us where you stand up front. We’ll work out whether the sale covers it.
Frequently Asked Questions
If I sell my Land Rover, can I still be part of the DPF claim?
That’s a question for the firm running the claim, not for us. Ask them directly whether former owners are covered and whether they’re still taking claimants, and get the answer before you accept a quote from anybody. Don’t rely on what an advert says the position is.
How much does it cost to have a Land Rover DPF cleaned or replaced?
In cost order it’s a forced regeneration first, then cleaning the filter, then a replacement filter, which on these engines is the expensive end. We don’t publish repair prices we haven’t charged. What catches people out is the cause: an injector or a turbo on top of the filter is what turns it into a four-figure job.
My Land Rover is in limp mode and I don't want to drive it. Will you still collect it?
Yes. It goes on a flatbed, so it doesn’t need to run, move or get to a main road. Tell us when you enquire if access is tight, a narrow drive, a locked garage or a height barrier, and the driver plans around it. Collection is free wherever the car is.
The DPF on my Land Rover has been cleaned once and the light is back. Does that cut the price?
Not automatically. It usually tells us the underlying cause was never found, which is information we want rather than a reason to drop the figure. Send any diagnostic printout or invoice you have, because the fault codes tell us whether it’s still only a filter問題 or something further back.
My Land Rover failed its MOT on emissions because of the DPF. Does that stop you buying it?
No. MOT failures are a large part of what we buy, and an emissions failure caused by a blocked DPF doesn't need putting right before you sell. Send the failure sheet with your enquiry if you still have it, because the advisories tell us plenty about the rest of the car.
Which Land Rovers And Range Rovers This Happens To
- Discovery Sport and Evoque on short suburban runs, where the filter rarely gets a clear stretch to burn off what it has collected.
- Discovery and Range Rover Sport diesels bought for towing and then used for the school run and the supermarket instead.
- Freelander 2, the older end of exactly the same story.
- Defender and Discovery Commercial that have spent a working life idling, stopping and starting.
There’s no year band here and no qualifying list. A 2011 Freelander 2 with a blocked filter is quoted on its condition and what the model is worth today, the same as a car half its age, and nothing is out of scope because a solicitor’s schedule doesn’t mention it.
